Spider Murphy Gang: The Bavarian Rock & Roll Revivalists

Spider Murphy Gang is a German rock and roll band that became a defining act of the Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) movement. Hailing from Bavaria, the group achieved nationwide fame in the early 1980s with their hit single "Skandal im Sperrbezirk," which topped the German charts for weeks.

Early career

Formed in 1977 in the Munich suburb of Haar, the band took its name from a character in the Elvis Presley film "Jailhouse Rock." Their early sound was rooted in 1950s-style rock and roll, performed in German, which set them apart from the English-language rock mainstream. They built a local following with energetic live shows before releasing their self-titled debut album in 1980.

Breakthrough

The band's breakthrough came in 1981 with the single "Skandal im Sperrbezirk" from their second album, Rock ’n’ Roll. The song, a cheeky rock and roll number about the red-light district, became a cultural phenomenon in Germany. It spent 18 weeks in the charts, including several weeks at number one, and was certified gold, selling over 500,000 copies.

Key tracks

Skandal im Sperrbezirk - This 1981 chart-topper is the band's signature song and a quintessential NDW anthem.

Hallo Joe - Another major hit from 1982, this track further cemented their status as hitmakers within the German rock scene.

Wir ham' noch nicht genug - A later single that demonstrated the band's enduring appeal and consistent rock and roll style.

The success of "Skandal im Sperrbezirk" propelled the album Rock ’n’ Roll to high chart positions and established Spider Murphy Gang as leading figures in the Deutschrock and NDW genres. They continued to release albums regularly throughout the 1980s and beyond, maintaining their core sound of guitar-driven rock and roll sung in German.

Despite the fading of the NDW wave, Spider Murphy Gang has never disbanded, continuing to tour and record new material, thus preserving their legacy as one of Germany's most recognizable rock acts. Their music, particularly the hits from the early 80s, remains a staple on German oldies and rock radio formats.

Fans of Spider Murphy Gang's brand of German-language rock and roll may also enjoy Die Toten Hosen, who share a punk-infused rock energy. The classic NDW sound can be explored through Nena, another iconic figure from the era. For more melodic German rock, listen to Die Ärzte, known for their witty lyrics and pop-punk style.
