Survivor: The Arena Rock Anthem Masters

Survivor is an American rock band best known for crafting some of the most iconic anthems in 1980s rock history, particularly through their association with the film Rocky III. Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, the band achieved massive commercial success in the early 1980s, with their 1982 single "Eye of the Tiger" becoming a global phenomenon, topping the Billboard Hot 100 and winning a Grammy Award.

Early Career

Survivor was formed in 1977 by guitarist Frankie Sullivan and keyboardist Jim Peterik. The band's initial lineup struggled to find a consistent vocalist and a breakout hit through their first two albums, 1979's self-titled debut and 1981's 'Premonition', released on the Scotti Brothers label. Their brand of melodic, guitar-driven rock was solid but had yet to capture the wider public's imagination, setting the stage for a dramatic turn in their career.

Breakthrough

The band's fortunes changed irrevocably in 1982 when actor Sylvester Stallone commissioned them to write the theme song for his film Rocky III. The resulting track, "Eye of the Tiger," became a cultural landmark. It spent six weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, was certified double platinum, and won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The song propelled its parent album, 'Eye of the Tiger', to multi-platinum status and defined Survivor's sound for a generation.

Key Tracks

Eye of the Tiger - The band's signature song and Grammy-winning Rocky III anthem that became a global number-one hit.

Burning Heart - Another successful Rocky film soundtrack entry (for Rocky IV) that reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986.

The Search Is Over - A power ballad from the 1984 album 'Vital Signs' that became the band's second Top 10 hit in the United States.

High on You - The lead single from 'Vital Signs' that showcased the band's knack for catchy, radio-friendly rock and reached the Top 10.

I Can't Hold Back - A driving rock single from 1984 that further solidified the band's arena rock stature with another Top 20 entry.

Following the monumental success of "Eye of the Tiger," Survivor released the album 'Caught in the Game' in 1983, which failed to match its predecessor's commercial heights. A significant shift occurred in 1984 with the departure of original vocalist Dave Bickler and the arrival of Jimi Jamison, whose powerful, smoother vocals ushered in a new era. The first album with Jamison, 'Vital Signs' (1984), was a major comeback, achieving double-platinum sales and spawning several hit singles, including "The Search Is Over" and "High on You." The band continued this success with 1986's 'When Seconds Count', which featured the hit "Burning Heart." Despite changing musical trends, Survivor's anthemic rock style, characterized by Sullivan's guitar work and huge choruses, maintained a loyal following. The band experienced various lineup changes and hiatuses over subsequent decades, with both Bickler and Jamison fronting the group at different points, but their legacy remained anchored in their early-80s peak.

Fans of Survivor's brand of anthemic, melodic hard rock often appreciate the work of similar artists from the same era. REO Speedwagon shares a Midwestern roots and a talent for blending rock energy with heartfelt ballads. Journey operated in a similar space of polished, vocal-driven arena rock with massive choruses. Foreigner crafted a comparable mix of hard-rocking singles and powerful ballads that dominated radio. 38 Special also delivered a Southern-tinged version of catchy, guitar-based rock anthems.
