The Bangles: Pioneers of Jangle Pop and 80s Rock

The Bangles are an American pop rock band that rose to international fame in the 1980s. Hailing from Los Angeles, California, the group achieved major commercial success with multi-platinum albums and a string of chart-topping singles.

Early career

The band formed in 1981, originally as The Bangs, with founding members Susanna Hoffs, Vicki Peterson, Debbi Peterson, and Annette Zilinskas. Their early sound was rooted in 1960s-inspired jangle pop and garage rock, leading to their self-titled debut EP on the independent label DownKiddie Records in 1982.

Breakthrough

The Bangles' major label breakthrough came with their 1984 album All Over the Place on Columbia Records. While not an immediate commercial smash, the album's critical acclaim and the single Hero Takes a Fall established their signature harmonies and guitar-driven sound, setting the stage for wider success.

Key tracks

Manic Monday - Written by Prince under a pseudonym, this 1986 single became their first major hit, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Walk Like an Egyptian - This quirky, infectious song from 1986 propelled the band to global stardom, becoming their first No. 1 single in the United States.

Eternal Flame - A powerful ballad from their 1988 album Everything, this song became their second U.S. No. 1 hit and a timeless radio staple.

Hazy Shade of Winter - Their aggressive, guitar-heavy cover of the Simon & Garfunkel song, featured in the film Less Than Zero, became a top 10 hit in 1987.

In Your Room - Another top 10 single from Everything, this track showcased the band's ability to craft sleek, atmospheric pop rock.

Following their peak in the late 1980s, internal pressures led The Bangles to disband in 1989. They reunited in the late 1990s, leading to new studio albums like Doll Revolution in 2003 and Sweetheart of the Sun in 2011, which revisited their classic jangle pop roots. The band, with a lineup including all original members except bassist Michael Steele, continues to perform live, celebrating their legacy as one of the most successful all-female bands in rock history.

Fans of The Bangles' harmonious blend of 60s pop and 80s rock often appreciate the work of The Go-Go's, who also emerged from the Los Angeles scene with catchy, new wave-infused pop. The melodic power pop of The Pretenders shares a similar balance of rock edge and strong songwriting. Listeners drawn to their vocal harmonies might explore Wilson Phillips, a group featuring the daughters of Bangles influences The Beach Boys and The Mamas & the Papas. The jangly guitar work of R.E.M. from the same era also provides a complementary sonic landscape.
