The Darkness
The Darkness: The Glam Rock Revivalists
The Darkness is a British rock band that ignited the 2000s with a flamboyant return to the spirit of 1970s and 80s hard rock. Hailing from Lowestoft, England, the band achieved massive commercial success with their 2003 debut album Permission to Land, which sold over 1.5 million copies in the UK alone and was certified quadruple platinum.
Early career
Formed in 2000, The Darkness coalesced around the charismatic Hawkins brothers: vocalist and guitarist Justin and drummer Dan. The lineup was completed by bassist Frankie Poullain and guitarist Ed Graham. They built a fervent live following with their high-energy shows and unapologetic embrace of spandex, guitar solos, and soaring falsetto vocals, directly contrasting the prevailing post-grunge and nu-metal trends of the era.
Breakthrough
The band's breakthrough arrived in 2003 with the release of their debut single I Believe in a Thing Called Love. Its infectious riff and bombastic video became an instant sensation. Their subsequent debut album, Permission to Land, released on Atlantic Records, topped the UK Albums Chart and spawned several hit singles, winning three BRIT Awards in 2004, including Best British Group.
Key tracks
I Believe in a Thing Called Love - This signature anthem defined their sound and became a global rock radio staple, driven by its iconic guitar riff and Justin Hawkins' remarkable vocal range.
Growing on Me - A top ten UK hit that further cemented their reputation for crafting catchy, riff-heavy rock songs with clever, tongue-in-cheek lyrics.
Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End) - Their 2003 Christmas single narrowly missed the UK number one spot, becoming a modern seasonal rock classic.
Love Is Only a Feeling - Showcased the band's ability to blend powerful power-balladry with their trademark theatrical style, becoming another major chart success.
One Way Ticket - The lead single from their second album, demonstrating their continued commitment to over-the-top rock spectacle and melodic hooks.
The intense pressure following their debut led to internal tensions, and the band fragmented after their 2005 sophomore effort One Way Ticket to Hell... and Back. The members pursued various projects before a triumphant reunion in 2011. Since then, The Darkness has steadily released new albums, including Hot Cakes (2012), Last of Our Kind (2015), Pinewood Smile (2017), Easter Is Cancelled (2019), and Motorheart (2021), consistently delivering their unique brand of hard rock.
Fans of The Darkness' high-energy, guitar-driven style may also enjoy the work of Airbourne, who channel a similar raw, anthemic rock energy. The glam-infused hooks of Steel Panther offer a more comedic take on the genre's excesses. For the classic rock foundations that inspire them, explore AC/DC and Queen, whose theatricality and massive choruses are clear forebears to The Darkness' sound.
The music of The Darkness remains a fixture on classic rock and modern rock radio stations, celebrated for its sheer entertainment value and masterful musicianship. Their enduring catalogue, from era-defining hits to loyal later releases, continues to be featured across rock-focused radio streams, ensuring their mission to keep rock fun is always on air.
