The Delines: Masters of Melancholic Alternative Country

The Delines are an American alternative country and folk rock band known for their cinematic, soul-infused narratives of broken lives and faded American dreams. Formed in Portland, Oregon, the group is a collaborative project spearheaded by singer Amy Boone and songwriter/guitarist Willy Vlautin, building a dedicated following through their rich, atmospheric sound and detailed storytelling.

Early Career

The Delines were formed in 2012 by novelist and Richmond Fontaine frontman Willy Vlautin, who sought to write songs for a specific voice-that of singer Amy Boone, previously of the alt-country band The Damnations TX. The initial lineup was rounded out by seasoned Portland musicians, including keyboardist Jenny Conlee of The Decemberists, creating a foundation for their distinct, moody sound. Their debut album, 'Colfax', was released in 2014 on the El Cortez label, immediately establishing their signature blend of countrypolitan melancholy and slow-burning rock.

Breakthrough

The band's critical breakthrough was solidified with their second album, 2019's 'The Imperial'. Released on the Decor Records label, the album was widely praised for its deep, soulful grooves and Boone's wounded, compelling vocals, earning spots on numerous year-end "best of" lists within the Americana and alternative country spheres. This release cemented The Delines' reputation as purveyors of some of the most poignant and beautifully arranged narrative songwriting in contemporary roots music.

Key Tracks

Colfax Avenue - The title track from their debut introduces their signature sound: a slow, haunting tale of desperation set against a backdrop of warm horns and languid rhythms.

The Imperial - The centerpiece of their sophomore album is a masterclass in atmospheric storytelling, detailing the life of a damaged hotel and its inhabitants with cinematic precision.

Let's Be Us Again - This track showcases the band's ability to blend classic country heartache with a modern, weary realism, driven by Boone's emotive delivery.

Following 'The Imperial', The Delines faced a significant setback when Amy Boone was seriously injured in a 2016 auto-pedestrian accident, putting the band's future on hold. Their resilience was proven with the 2022 release of 'The Sea Drift', a concept album set on the Texas Gulf Coast that continued their exploration of flawed characters and lush, melancholic arrangements. The band, including core members like Tucker Jackson on pedal steel and Sean Oldham on drums, continues to operate independently, often releasing music through their own channels and maintaining a strong connection with their audience through intimate performances.

Fans of The Delines' brand of narrative-driven alternative country and folk rock may also appreciate the work of Richmond Fontaine, Willy Vlautin's former band, which shares a similar literary approach to songwriting. The melancholic country-rock of Lydia Loveless offers a rawer, more rock-oriented take on similar themes. The atmospheric storytelling of Caitlin Rose also explores classic country motifs with a modern sensibility. Lastly, the detailed character sketches and rootsy sound of Silver Jews provide a parallel in the indie rock realm.
