The Retro Sound

The Retro Sound: Masters of Modern Power Pop
The Retro Sound is an American power pop band known for revitalizing the melodic, guitar-driven sound of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Formed in Los Angeles, the group achieved commercial success with their second album, Neon Nights, which charted on the Billboard 200 and spawned a certified gold single.
Early career
The Retro Sound formed in 2012, founded by vocalist/guitarist Alex Vance and drummer Sam Rivera after meeting at a club in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. Their self-released debut EP, Static Transmission (2014), caught the attention of indie label Crystal Clear Records, which signed the band and reissued the EP the following year.
This early work established their signature blend of crunchy power chords, layered harmonies, and synthesizer accents. The band spent the next two years honing their songwriting and building a loyal following through relentless touring on the West Coast club circuit.
Breakthrough
The band's breakthrough arrived in 2018 with their sophomore album, Neon Nights, released on Crystal Clear. The album's lead single, "Electric Heartbeat," became a surprise hit on alternative rock radio, peaking at number 14 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart.
Driven by this single's success, Neon Nights debuted at number 78 on the Billboard 200. "Electric Heartbeat" was later certified gold by the RIAA for moving over 500,000 units, solidifying The Retro Sound's place in the modern rock landscape.
Key tracks
Electric Heartbeat — This gold-certified single broke the band on alternative radio with its anthemic chorus and driving rhythm.
Neon Nights — The album's title track showcases their perfect synthesis of new wave keyboards and power pop guitar crunch.
Static Transmission — Their early signature song from the debut EP remains a fan favorite and live set staple.

Building on this momentum, The Retro Sound released their third album, Echo Location, in 2021. The record saw them experimenting with broader production while staying true to their core sound, and it included a notable collaboration with veteran producer and musician Mitch Froom.
