Early career

The band's genesis was a 2000 recording session at the legendary Sweet Tea studio in Oxford, Mississippi. The project united the Dickinson brothers, Luther (guitar) and Cody (drums) of The North Mississippi Allstars, with bassist Chris Chew and the avant-jazz organist John Medeski. Their goal was to create a purely instrumental album rooted in the spiritual fervor of Southern gospel music.

Breakthrough

The Word's self-titled debut album was released in 2001 on Ropeadope Records, a label known for its adventurous jazz and funk roster.
