The Zutons
The Zutons: Merseyside's Eclectic Indie Rock Story
The Zutons are a British indie rock band from Liverpool, known for their energetic fusion of alternative rock, soul, and pop. Formed in 2001, the group achieved significant commercial success in the mid-2000s, most notably with their platinum-certified second album, "Tired of Hanging Around," which spawned a UK number-one single.
Early Career
The Zutons came together in Liverpool in 2001, with a lineup featuring Dave McCabe (vocals/guitar), Abi Harding (saxophone), Sean Payne (drums), and Russell Pritchard (bass). Their early sound was a distinctive blend of garage rock energy and soulful, saxophone-driven melodies, setting them apart in the post-Britpop landscape. They signed with Deltasonic Records, the label closely associated with the early-2000s Liverpool scene, and released their debut album, "Who Killed...... The Zutons?" in 2004.
Breakthrough
The band's breakthrough arrived in 2006 with their second album, "Tired of Hanging Around." The lead single, "Valerie," co-written with producer Mike Crossey, became a massive hit, especially after a celebrated cover version by Mark Ronson featuring Amy Winehouse. The album itself reached number two on the UK Albums Chart and was certified platinum, cementing The Zutons' place in the 2000s indie rock canon.
