YOASOBI: The Japanese Pop Duo Turning Stories into Hits
YOASOBI is a Japanese music duo known for creating pop songs based on existing written stories. Formed in 2019, the pair has achieved massive commercial success in Japan, with several singles topping the national charts and earning multi-platinum certifications.
Early Career
The duo was formed in 2019 under the label Sony Music Entertainment Japan. YOASOBI consists of producer Ayase, who composes the music, and vocalist Ikura, who provides the singing voice. Their unique concept from the outset was to transform novels and other literary works into music, primarily sourcing stories from the creative platform Monogatary.
Breakthrough
YOASOBI's debut single, "Yoru ni Kakeru," released in late 2019, became a viral sensation in 2020. The song broke records on the Billboard Japan Hot 100, where it maintained the number-one position for weeks, and it achieved the rare feat of being certified Diamond for streaming by the RIAJ. This track established their signature sound of emotive, synth-driven J-pop and defined their narrative-driven approach.
