Zwan
Zwan: The Short-Lived Alternative Rock Supergroup
Zwan was an American alternative rock supergroup formed in 2001 by former Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan. The band released only one studio album, 2003's Mary Star of the Sea, before disbanding later that same year.
Early Career
Following the dissolution of The Smashing Pumpkins in 2000, Billy Corgan began assembling a new musical project. He recruited guitarist Matt Sweeney, formerly of Chavez and Skunk, alongside former Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and bassist Paz Lenchantin from A Perfect Circle.
The lineup was completed by guitarist David Pajo of Slint fame, creating a collective with significant indie and alternative rock credibility. The group initially performed under the name Djali Zwan before shortening it simply to Zwan.
Breakthrough
Zwan's breakthrough came with the 2003 release of their debut and only album, Mary Star of the Sea, on the Reprise Records label. The lead single, Honestly, received substantial alternative radio airplay and the album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart, selling over 100,000 copies in its first week.
Key tracks
Honestly - This jangly, upbeat single served as the band's most recognizable track and main entry into alternative radio playlists.
Lyric - A driving, guitar-heavy song that showcased the band's collective rock power and complex arrangements.
Jesus, I / Mary Star of the Sea - This sprawling, fourteen-minute epic demonstrated the ambitious, progressive songwriting Corgan brought to the project.
Settle Down - A track highlighting the melodic and harmonic interplay between the three guitarists in the band's unique setup.
Despite the promising start, internal tensions led to Zwan's breakup by the end of 2003. David Pajo departed during the album's supporting tour, and Corgan dissolved the group shortly after, citing a loss of collective inspiration. A second album's worth of more experimental, acoustic-oriented material, often referred to as Djali Zwan, was recorded but remains officially unreleased.
For fans of Billy Corgan's work with The Smashing Pumpkins, the dense guitar textures will feel familiar. The collaborative spirit and indie rock pedigree connect to Chavez, Matt Sweeney's former band. The involvement of Paz Lenchantin links to the alternative metal sound of A Perfect Circle. The experimental guitar work also shares DNA with the post-rock of Slint, David Pajo's seminal group.
Though Zwan's existence was brief, their sole album remains a notable, if often overlooked, chapter in the story of 2000s alternative rock, capturing a specific moment of collaboration between established figures from the genre's recent history.
