AJR: The Indie Pop Brothers from New York City
AJR is an American indie pop band consisting of the three Met brothers: Adam, Jack, and Ryan. Hailing from New York City, the trio has carved a unique niche with their self-produced, theatrical sound, achieving multi-platinum certifications and a top 10 album on the Billboard 200 chart.
Early career
The brothers began making music together in their living room in Chelsea, New York, around 2005. They initially performed covers and sold their original songs on the streets of Manhattan, funding their early work and building a grassroots following.
Their first major independent release was the EP "I'm Ready" in 2013, which featured their viral hit of the same name sampling SpongeBob SquarePants. This DIY success led to a deal with Warner Music Group's S-Curve Records in 2014.
Breakthrough
The band's mainstream breakthrough arrived in 2017 with the single Weak, a track from their second studio album "The Click". The song became a global hit, reaching platinum status in multiple countries including the United States and peaking in the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100.
This success propelled "The Click" and its 2019 deluxe edition "Neotheater" to significant commercial performance, with the latter debuting at number 8 on the Billboard 200. Their fanbase, deeply engaged online, grew rapidly during this period.
