Manowar
Manowar: The Kings of True Metal
Manowar is an American heavy metal band renowned for their loud, epic sound and lyrical themes of fantasy, mythology, and warrior culture. Formed in 1980, the group has built a dedicated global fanbase known as the "Army of Immortals" through a relentless touring ethic and a steadfast commitment to their self-proclaimed "True Metal" ethos.
Early career
Manowar was founded in 1980 in Auburn, New York, by bassist Joey DeMaio and guitarist Ross "The Boss" Friedman. DeMaio had previously worked as a bass tech for Black Sabbath, an experience that fueled his ambition to create a new, powerful metal force. The band's debut album, Battle Hymns, was released in 1982 on Liberty Records and featured narration by legendary actor Orson Welles on the track "Dark Avenger," immediately setting a tone for dramatic, larger-than-life music.
Breakthrough
Manowar's commercial breakthrough came with their third album, 1987's Fighting the World, released on Atlantic Records. This album brought their sound to a wider audience, particularly in Europe, where the title track and "Blow Your Speakers" became anthems. The band's following album, 1988's Kings of Metal, is often considered their definitive work, solidifying their status with anthems like "Heart of Steel" and "Hail and Kill," and achieving significant sales certifications in several European countries, including Germany.
Key tracks
Battle Hymns - The title track of their debut established their signature sound of pounding rhythms and heroic themes.
Kings of Metal - This anthem from the album of the same name became a live staple and a declaration of the band's self-appointed title.
Heart of Steel - A slower, more melodic power ballad from Kings of Metal that showcased the band's dynamic range and remains a fan favorite.
Hail and Kill - A relentless, aggressive track from Kings of Metal that exemplifies the band's most intense and martial side.
Warriors of the World - The title track from their 2002 album marked a successful later-career resurgence, featuring orchestral elements alongside their classic metal power.
The band's lineup has seen changes over the decades, with Joey DeMaio remaining the constant driving force. Eric Adams' powerful, operatic vocals have been a fixture since the beginning, while the drum and guitar positions have rotated among several skilled musicians. Manowar is famous for their loud live shows, once holding a Guinness World Record for the loudest concert, and for their intense loyalty to their fans, often staging elaborate, lengthy performances.
Artists with a similar grandiose approach to heavy metal or power metal include Judas Priest for their twin-guitar attack and metal anthems. Helloween shares the melodic and epic scope, particularly in the power metal genre. HammerFall carries on the tradition of heroic, fantasy-based heavy metal much like Manowar. Saxon represents another pillar of classic heavy metal with a similar dedication to the genre's core principles.
