Scissor Sisters
Scissor Sisters: The Glamorous Revivalists of Pop Rock
Scissor Sisters are an American pop rock band known for their flamboyant style and infectious blend of 1970s disco, glam rock, and modern pop. Hailing from New York City, the group achieved major international success in the early 2000s, with their self-titled debut album becoming the best-selling album of 2004 in the United Kingdom.
Early career
Formed in 2001, the band coalesced around the core duo of Jake Shears and Babydaddy, later joined by Ana Matronic, Del Marquis, and Paddy Boom. Their name was inspired by a sexual position, setting the tone for their camp, hedonistic aesthetic. They built a reputation through energetic live shows in downtown New York clubs, leading to their first single, Electrobix, in 2002.
Breakthrough
The band's breakthrough came in 2004 with the release of their debut album, Scissor Sisters, on Polydor Records. Its lead single, a glitter-drenched cover of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb, became a top-ten hit in the UK. The album itself, propelled by the global smash Take Your Mama, topped the UK charts and was certified multi-platinum, selling over 2.6 million copies there alone.
Key tracks
Comfortably Numb - This audacious, disco-fied cover became their signature early hit, introducing their bold reinterpretative style to a wide audience.
Take Your Mama - A glam rock anthem that became a worldwide club and radio staple, defining the celebratory core of the band's sound.
I Don't Feel Like Dancin' - Co-written with Elton John, this track from their second album Ta-Dah became their biggest commercial success, topping the charts in the UK and several other countries.
Filthy/Gorgeous - An ode to New York nightlife and hedonism, this single captured their risqué, playful lyrical style and solidified their cult following.
Only the Horses - A later single from 2012's Magic Hour, produced by Calvin Harris, which showcased their ability to merge their classic sound with contemporary dance production.
Following their massive debut, the 2006 follow-up Ta-Dah also debuted at number one in the UK and spawned further hits. The band's subsequent albums, Night Work (2010) and Magic Hour (2012), continued their exploration of dance-pop, though with varying commercial results. Known for vibrant collaborations, Scissor Sisters have worked with artists like Elton John, Kylie Minogue, and Carlos Santana. After a period of hiatus where members pursued solo projects, the band has reconvened for select performances, reminding audiences of their unique, joyous place in 21st-century pop rock.
Fans of Scissor Sisters' eclectic and theatrical pop rock might also enjoy the dance-punk energy of The Sounds, the glam-inspired hooks of The Darkness, or the sophisticated pop songwriting of Goldfrapp. Their connection to a modern disco revival also links them to the work of Róisín Murphy.
