Stars: The Dream Pop Architects of Indie Rock
Stars is a Canadian indie pop and indie rock band known for their lush, narrative-driven soundscapes. Formed in Toronto in 2000, the group has built a dedicated following through a consistent output of critically acclaimed albums and emotionally resonant live performances.
Early career
The band was formed by vocalist Torquil Campbell and keyboardist Chris Seligman after they met in New York City. They soon relocated to Montreal, Quebec, a city with a vibrant music scene, and expanded the lineup to include vocalist Amy Millan, guitarist Evan Cranley, and drummer Pat McGee.
Their debut album, Nightsongs, was released in 2001 on the Canadian independent label Le Grand Magistery, establishing their signature blend of dream pop and indie rock with a melancholic, cinematic touch.
Breakthrough
Stars achieved wider recognition with their 2004 album Set Yourself on Fire, released on the influential Arts & Crafts label. The album, featuring richer production and orchestral elements, became a landmark release in the 2000s indie scene, praised for its dueling male-female vocals and intricate songwriting.
While it did not achieve major mainstream chart success, Set Yourself on Fire earned gold certification in Canada and solidified the band's reputation as stalwarts of the indie genre.
Key tracks
Your Ex-Lover Is Dead - This orchestral-driven opening track from Set Yourself on Fire became an indie anthem, encapsulating the band's dramatic narrative style.
Ageless Beauty - A quintessential indie pop song featuring Amy Millan's lead vocals, showcasing the band's ability to craft instantly catchy yet sophisticated melodies.
Elevator Love Letter - A fan favorite that highlights the intimate vocal interplay between Campbell and Millan over a steady, driving rhythm.
Take Me to the Riot - This energetic, guitar-led track demonstrates the band's rock-oriented side and has remained a staple of their live sets.
No One Is Lost - The title track from their 2014 album exemplifies their later dance-inflected sound while maintaining their lyrical depth.
Following their breakthrough, Stars continued to release albums regularly, including In Our Bedroom After the War (2007), The Five Ghosts (2010), and There Is No Love in Fluorescent Light (2017). Their work often explores themes of love, heartbreak, urban life, and politics.
The members of Stars have been involved in numerous collaborations and side projects, most notably with fellow Montreal-based bands on the Arts & Crafts roster. Their music has been featured in various television shows and films, further expanding their audience beyond the indie rock sphere.
Fans of Stars' brand of literate, emotive indie pop and indie rock may also appreciate the work of Broken Social Scene, with whom they share members and a collaborative spirit. The New Pornographers offer a similarly power-pop-inflected take on sophisticated Canadian indie rock. The atmospheric dream pop of Beach House explores comparable sonic textures and moods.
