Stone Sour: The Versatile Force in Modern Hard Rock

Stone Sour is an American hard rock band originally formed in Des Moines, Iowa. The group is best known for achieving multi-platinum success with their self-titled debut album and scoring several top-ten rock radio hits throughout their career.

Early Career

The band was initially founded in 1992 by vocalist Corey Taylor and guitarist Josh Rand, operating locally in Iowa before going on hiatus. This early period allowed them to develop a melodic yet heavy sound distinct from Taylor's other projects. Stone Sour reformed in the early 2000s, leading to a demo that caught the attention of Roadrunner Records.

Breakthrough

Stone Sour's breakthrough arrived in 2002 with the release of their self-titled debut album. The record was certified gold in the United States, driven by the success of the singles Bother and Get Inside. Bother in particular became a mainstream rock hit and earned a Grammy nomination, establishing the band's dynamic range.

Key Tracks

Bother - This acoustic-driven ballad showcased the band's melodic depth and became their first major crossover hit.

Through Glass - The lead single from 2006's Come What(ever) May, it became a number-one hit on the US Mainstream Rock chart.

Get Inside - The aggressive lead single from their debut announced the band's heavier, riff-oriented side.

Say You'll Haunt Me - This track from 2010's Audio Secrecy also reached the top of the Mainstream Rock chart.

Song #3 - A later hit from 2017's Hydrograd, it demonstrated the band's enduring ability to craft hard rock anthems.

The band's second album, 2006's Come What(ever) May, debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold. This era solidified their status as a major force in modern rock, leading to extensive worldwide touring. Subsequent albums like Audio Secrecy (2010) and the two-part concept album House of Gold & Bones (2012-2013) further explored progressive and alternative metal influences.

Stone Sour's final studio album to date, Hydrograd, arrived in 2017 and was noted for its raw, live-band feel. The band has been on an indefinite hiatus since 2020, allowing members to pursue other musical ventures. Their catalog demonstrates a consistent commitment to blending heavy guitar work with strong melodic hooks.

Fans of Stone Sour's blend of aggressive riffs and melodic songcraft often appreciate the work of Slipknot, which shares frontman Corey Taylor. The hard rock approach of Halestorm offers a similar balance of power and melody. For the conceptual ambition of their later work, listeners might explore Avenged Sevenfold. The alternative metal groove of Chevelle also resonates with a similar audience.
