The Flaming Lips: Oklahoma's Psychedelic Rock Explorers
The Flaming Lips are an American rock band from Oklahoma City, known for their expansive, psychedelic sound and elaborate live performances. Formed in 1983, the group has released over fifteen studio albums, achieving critical acclaim and a dedicated cult following for their adventurous musical approach.
Early Career
The band was formed by brothers Mark (bass) and Wayne Coyne (vocals, guitar), along with Michael Ivins (bass) and Dave Kostka (drums). Their early work in the mid-1980s was characterized by a raw, punk-influenced sound, captured on their self-titled debut album in 1985 and the subsequent releases "Hear It Is" (1986) and "Oh My Gawd!!!" (1987).
Breakthrough
The Flaming Lips' breakthrough into wider alternative rock consciousness came with the 1993 album "Transmissions from the Satellite Heart." The single "She Don't Use Jelly" became an unexpected hit on MTV and modern rock radio, propelling the band to new visibility. This success established their signature blend of melodic noise and quirky lyricism.
Key Tracks
She Don't Use Jelly - This 1994 single's unlikely success on MTV brought the band its first major commercial attention.
Race for the Prize - The opening track from 1999's "The Soft Bulletin" showcased a dramatic shift toward orchestral, emotionally resonant psychedelic pop.
Do You Realize?? - Arguably their most famous song, this track from 2002's "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" is a lush, life-affirming anthem.
The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song - A driving, optimistic single from 2006's "At War with the Mystics" that won a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
Following "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots," the band continued to experiment, releasing ambitious projects like the 2006 film and album "Christmas on Mars" and the 2009 double-album "Embryonic." Their later work includes collaborations with artists like Miley Cyrus and Kesha, and they are renowned for their live shows featuring giant balloons, confetti, and Wayne Coyne's signature crowd-walking in a giant transparent ball.
Artists with a similar adventurous spirit in alternative and psychedelic rock include Mercury Rev, Spiritualized, and The Olivia Tremor Control.
