Twenty One Pilots: The Genre-Defying Duo

Twenty One Pilots is an American musical duo from Columbus, Ohio, known for their genre-blending sound that fuses alternative hip hop, pop, rock, and electronica. Their major commercial breakthrough came with the 2015 album Blurryface, which became the first album in history to have every track receive at least a gold certification from the RIAA.

Early career

The band was formed in 2009 by high school friends Tyler Joseph, Nick Thomas, and Chris Salih. After self-releasing their debut album, Twenty One Pilots, in 2009, the lineup solidified as the duo of Joseph and drummer Josh Dun following the 2011 self-released record Regional at Best. Their energetic, DIY live shows in Ohio built a dedicated local following, leading to a record deal with Fueled by Ramen in 2012.

Breakthrough

The duo's mainstream breakthrough arrived in 2015 with their fourth studio album, Blurryface. Fueled by the global success of the singles Stressed Out and Ride, the album peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 and has been certified multi-platinum in multiple countries. This era established Twenty One Pilots as a defining act of 2010s alternative music.

Key tracks

Stressed Out — This Grammy-winning single from Blurryface topped the Billboard Hot 100 and became a generational anthem, pushing the album to massive commercial success.

Ride — Another multi-platinum single from Blurryface, it reached number five on the Hot 100 and showcased the duo's ability to blend reggae-infused pop with introspective lyrics.

Heathens — Created for the Suicide Squad soundtrack in 2016, this dark, slow-burning track hit number two on the Hot 100 and was certified diamond.

Shy Away — The lead single from their 2021 album Scaled and Icy marked a return with a brighter, synth-driven sound while still achieving top alternative radio chart positions.

Their 2018 album, Trench, debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and was preceded by the successful singles Jumpsuit and Nico and the Niners. The duo has collaborated with artists like Mutemath and has headlined major festivals worldwide, maintaining a fiercely loyal fanbase known as the Skeleton Clique.
