Zero 7: Pioneers of Downtempo and Chillout

Zero 7 is the acclaimed British downtempo and chillout production duo of Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker. Hailing from London, the pair achieved major commercial success with their 2001 debut album Simple Things, which was certified platinum in the UK and nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize.

Early career

Binns and Hardaker, friends since their school days, began their music industry journey in the early 1990s working as studio assistants at Mickie Most's RAK Studios in London. Their initial foray into production was a 1999 remix of Radiohead's "Climbing Up the Walls," which caught the attention of the label Ultimate Dilemma and led to their first EP, EP1, later that same year.

Breakthrough

The duo's breakthrough arrived decisively in 2001 with the release of their debut studio album, Simple Things. Released on Ultimate Dilemma in the UK and Palm Pictures in the US, the album was a critical and commercial smash, peaking at number 28 on the UK Albums Chart and achieving platinum sales status. Its lush, soulful sound defined the early 2000s chillout movement.

After a more electronic turn with Yeah Ghost, the duo took a hiatus before returning with the relaxed, mature sounds of 2019's Shadows. Throughout their career, their collaborative roster has included notable artists like José González, Martha Tilston, and Mozez.
