You’ll Never Look at Sweatshirts and Hoodies the Same After This

While sweatshirts and hoodies may seem very similar (and in fact they’re cut from the same cloth), why is it that they’re worn very differently

The Big Thing You May Not Have Considered When Buying a Graphic Hoodie

In a previous episode, we discussed the (very interesting) history of the hoodie and how it was first created by adding a hood and kangaroo pouch to a sweatshirt. This made sense as an evolution of the garment, but with those seemingly subtle additions came a bigger change: hoodies became more of an outer wear item, whereas sweatshirts became more of an inner wear item.

Inner Wear or Outer Wear? It’s a Grey Area

Most people who buy hoodies consider them to be an outer layer, or at least a middle layer. You probably wear a t-shirt or something underneath the hoodie so that you can take off the hoodie if you get too hot.

But how many people wear a t-shirt underneath a sweatshirt and plan to remove the sweatshirt if they get too hot? Even though the body of both items is exactly the same, they are treated quite differently.

You could also think of it this way: one could say that all hoodies are sweatshirts, but all sweatshirts are not hoodies.

Do you consider this when buying a warm and cozy top layer?

The theory was proven further when zip-up hoodies appeared on the market. This marked a further transition of the hoodie from sweatshirt, to jacket or outer layer.

Why Hoodies and Sweatshirts May Have Different Graphic Designs

This difference between the sweatshirt and hoodie is an important factor when it comes to designing graphic sweatshirts and hoodies here at 1923 Main Street. Since the hoodie is considered to be a middle or outer layer by buyers, we choose graphic designs with different considerations than we do for a sweatshirt.

That is why on 1923 Main Street apparel you might not always see a certain graphic design available on both a sweatshirt and a hoodie. Sometimes, it’s one or the other. The design decision for apparel is often made based on the common use case of a hoodie as an outer layer. Some designs lend themselves well to t-shirts or sweatshirts (which are worn less frequently as than a hoodie), but might not be great on a hoodie -- which might be worn everyday – like a light jacket. The aesthetics of the design also play a role. We tend to keep designs clean, bold and crisp for hoodies, whereas sweatshirts (and t-shirts) offer more room (and space on the garment, literally) for more detailed and colorful graphic designs.

These considerations are part of the design process when selecting apparel items for 1923 Main Street graphic creations.
