Interview: 80s Freestyle with DJ Martinee

Interview: 80s Freestyle with DJ Martinee

Author: Will Padilla | 80s Now February 17, 2025 Duration: 33:33

Will chats with DJ Martinee the multi-platinum record-selling songwriter and producer, who helped pioneer freestyle music in the 1980s.

In 1984, DJ Martinee formed the hit vocal group Exposé, which became the first to attain four Top 10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including the song written by our guest “Seasons Change.” In fact, he wrote all of the songs on the band’s first album “Exposure” and most of the tracks on their 1989 follow up “What You Don’t Know.”

DJ Martinee has also produced, written and remixed tracks for a number of other popular artists, including Ricky Martin, Dead or Alive, Celine Dion and The Pet Shop Boys. Today, our guest continues to working on new music in the studio and spinning hits as a DJ in the clubs.

His latest group O-Baby, which includes Laurie Miller, a founding member of Exposé, will be performing March 7 at Café 27 in Southwest Ranches, Florida. And you can hear remixes of “Point of No Return,” featuring O-Baby, and including a wonderful ballad-version of the hit track, on all streaming platforms.

Each week on 1980s Now, host Will Padilla digs into the lasting impact of that decade's pop culture, arguing there's more to its modern resonance than simple nostalgia. This podcast connects the dots between then and now through personal stories and conversations with the people who shaped the era-musicians, actors, directors, and other insiders. The discussions reveal how the so-called "era of greed" actually cultivated seminal moments in film, television, music, and sports that continue to define our current landscape. You'll hear specific analysis about why certain movies still look groundbreaking, how TV shows of the period tackled themes that feel surprisingly current, and which musical innovations from the 80s are still being mined by today's artists. It’s a detailed exploration for anyone who enjoys a deep dive, offering a richer understanding of the decade's genuine artistic legacy beyond the familiar hits and iconic imagery.
