2025 Martini Awards Part 1: Most Overrated, Underrated, Honest Political Figures

Author: Jim Geraghty & Greg Corombos – Political Humor Commentary December 23, 2025 Duration: 25:18
Today, Jim and Greg begin handing out their prestigious annual 3 Martini Lunch Awards! Starting today and running through New Year’s Day, they’ll unveil their picks in categories ranging from rising star to the best and worst political ideas, plus the stories the media ignored and the ones they couldn’t stop talking about. It all builds toward next week, when Jim and Greg reveal their Person of the Year, Turncoat of the Year, and their political predictions for 2026.

In this first installment, Jim and Greg offer their individual selections for Most Overrated Political Figure, Most Underrated Political Figure, and Most Honest Political Figure.

In the overrated department, Jim picks a guy who managed to lose two elections this year while acting like he was entitled to the office the entire time. Greg picks a likely 2028 presidential candidate whose record is one of repeated, abysmal failure.

When it comes to underrated political figures, Jim and Greg agree on a Trump cabinet member who avoids the spotlight but consistently delivers strong results. Greg also offers an honorable mention to a figure who played a key role in the GOP’s victory in the government shutdown fight, even if there’s still significant room for improvement in other parts of the job.

For Most Honest Political Figure, Jim highlights a Democratic lawmaker who openly criticized his party’s incoherent stance during the shutdown and beyond. Greg points to a House member willing to publicly condemn electoral shenanigans committed by a fellow Democrat.

Don't miss tomorrow's special edition, when Jim and Greg list the political figures they were sorry to see pass away in 2025. They'll also name their rising stars over the past year and those who seem to be fading into political oblivion.

Each day can feel like a barrage of headlines, a chaotic mix of the serious and the absurd. That’s where 3 Martini Lunch-Political Humor & Commentary comes in. Hosts Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos have built a following by sorting through the noise with a specific, effective ritual. They serve up the day’s events in three distinct parts they call "martinis": one for the genuinely good news, another for the frustratingly bad, and a final one reserved for the utterly crazy stories that defy belief. What you’ll hear in this podcast is a conversation that feels like sitting with two well-informed friends who aren’t afraid to be sharp, witty, or blunt. They analyze politics and culture with a perspective that cuts through partisan talking points, aiming for clarity and, often, a much-needed laugh. The pace is brisk and designed for a commute or a lunch break, but the commentary is substantial. Tuning into this podcast means getting a digest of what matters, framed with humor and insight that makes the whirlwind of news actually digestible. It’s a daily check-in that manages to be both smart and consistently entertaining, providing a structured way to understand the world without losing your sanity in the process.
