Ep. 4: GAY FIELDS

Ep. 4: GAY FIELDS

Author: DoubleDouble Podcasts from Canadaland July 4, 2024 Duration: 43:41

Synopsis: On the steps of New York’s Natural History Museum, Owen and Laine meet Eliot Schrefer, author of Queer Ducks (and Other Animals), a book Eliot wrote to tell young gay humans that they are not alone in their Queerness. Predictably, the book faced backlash and banishment from schools and libraries. Owen and Laine then turn their binoculars across the pond to hear the story of how the Irish people rallied together to save the life of a little gay bull named Benjy.

Guests: Alex Leigh ; Eliot Schrefer - author of Queer Ducks (and Other Animals); John Carmody - founder of Animal Rights Action Now

Grab your binoculars and lace up your boots for A Field Guide to Gay Animals, a podcast from DoubleDouble Podcasts and Canadaland that reorients our understanding of the wild. Hosts Owen Ever and Laine Kaplan-Levenson guide listeners on an audio expedition, moving beyond simplistic nature documentaries to explore the complex, vibrant realities of sexuality and gender across species. This series is built on a simple, profound fact: homosexual behavior has been documented in over a thousand animal species. Each episode delves into the lives of specific creatures, from albatrosses to bottlenose dolphins, weaving together scientific observation, cultural commentary, and a palpable sense of joy. The podcast challenges the long-held use of the "natural" world to justify rigid human social norms, instead revealing a planet that is, frankly, far queerer than many classrooms ever let on. It’s a blend of natural history, societal critique, and curious celebration, asking what we can learn about our own relationships by paying closer attention to the diverse intimacies flourishing all around us. Recognized as an Official Selection of the 2024 Tribeca Audio Festival and one of Apple Podcasts' Favourites, this show invites you to hear the animal kingdom in a whole new way.
