This marks the end of The Crow trilogy...of my shows, not the film trilogy. Much like the Robert Johnson episode, I was shocked to find out how little of full story of this incredibly talented performer's death I had actually known all this time.

The Crow stands out from many other subjects of A History of Rock n' Roll in Film and Rock n' Roll. I simply don't talk in as much detail about most movies I cover on these episodes. But I think it stands to reason that many of them didn't have an influence on modern culture, moviemaking and popular music like this one did. Usually the subjects covered in the films I review (the rock stars with names in the title, or just the era of culture portrayed) had more influence in real life than the films themselves.

This episode covers a lot more Nine Inch Nails through some great interviews with Trent Reznor from the 90s, plus one little magazine review of an early New Order show that I couldn't help but include, and a quick deviation at the beginning toward a famous comic book innovator who once found himself in the same positions as a young James O'Barr did while serving in the U.S. military.

This one gets a bit silly, a bit raw, a bit sad, but it was needed. Cheers, all. Your continued indulgence is noted and appreciated.

Hosted by Jay R Smith, A History of Rock n' Roll in Film and Rock n' Roll explores the deep and often surprising connections between the silver screen and the amplifier. This isn't just a series of movie reviews; it's a cultural excavation. Each episode uses films-from major biopics and concert documentaries to obscure B-movies and tangential appearances-as a starting point to unpack a much larger story. You'll hear about the artists whose lives were dramatized, the business deals negotiated in studio lots, and the technological innovations, like new sound recording methods, that were pioneered for these projects and went on to shape music itself. The podcast argues that rock's history isn't just in the grooves of a record, but also in the flickering light of a projector, examining how cinematic portrayals have influenced our perception of the genre's legends and myths. By looking at these cinematographic products, Jay traces the evolution of what he calls that "glorious cultural mutant," revealing how film hasn't just documented rock n' roll, but has actively participated in its creation and legacy. The conversation is as much about the music as it is about the movies that tried to capture its chaotic, revolutionary spirit.
