A Year of Crime as Reported in the Newspapers of West Tennessee
Arrested for selling seances. An entire police force bounced. Suicide over court martial. Convicted for Sunday theater performance. Murder, fights, and fires.
The Boliver Bulletin covered Bolivar, Hardeman County, Tennessee. This edition is loaded with crime-related articles. It also includes a day-by-day account of news from around the world that happened in 1885.
Some of the articles use offensive racial labels. I decided to read the accounts as they were written to present the language of the time. I believe we must face our past, even the ugly parts of it. Whitewashing our past does not make the harm disappear. I regret any offense caused by these hurtful words.
