Episode 1: Ethics of AI Surveillance Tech

Episode 1: Ethics of AI Surveillance Tech

Author: Women in AI Ethics February 15, 2022 Duration: 27:40

This week, we launched our new season where we highlight brilliant women working in this critical space and discuss their groundbreaking work. Our first 6 episodes are sponsored by IBM and we kicked off the first one with Francesca Rossi, IBM Fellow and AI Ethics Global Leader. We covered a broad range of topics including her career journey, the importance of multidisciplinary perspectives in AI, and IBM’s stance on ethics of commercially deployed AI systems, including facial recognition technologies. (You will hear some pinging noises in the background as we didn’t get a chance to mute the notifications and our furry research assistant also decided to join in)

The views in this interview are those of the person being interviewed and don't necessarily represent IBM's positions, strategies or opinions.

There’s a lot of talk about responsible artificial intelligence, but what does that work actually look like on the ground? AI Ethics Diaries: Keeping it Real cuts through the theoretical debates to bring you candid conversations with the women who are building, auditing, and governing AI systems right now. Created by the Women in AI Ethics community, this podcast serves as a direct line to practitioners who are navigating the complex, often messy realities of creating equitable technology. Each episode is a deep dive into a personal career journey, offering more than just abstract principles. You’ll hear firsthand accounts of the challenges and triumphs encountered while pushing for tangible change inside companies, research labs, and policy rooms. These are unfiltered discussions-no corporate spin, no sales pitches-just honest reflections on the work that shapes our collective future. By tuning in, you gain a rare window into the strategies, insights, and lived experiences that are actively reshaping the field. This isn't about distant ideals; it's about the practical steps being taken today to ensure tomorrow's tech serves everyone. If you're curious about the human stories behind the headlines and want to understand the real momentum in ethical AI, this is the podcast for you.
