Episode 23: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Episode 23: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Author: Brian Fischer and Rodrigo Monico-Barros December 7, 2018 Duration: 1:07:08
Are you not entertained? Yes? Wait, yes as in you are not entertained, or yes as in you are entertained? Never mind, it’s a rhetorical question. Here’s a question that’s not rhetorical: Is Gladiator a better movie than Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? The Academy Award voters in 2001 thought so (but they also thought Shakespeare in Love is better than Saving Private Ryan, so what the hell do they know?). Both movies came out in 2000, and both deal with warriors seeking revenge, but while Gladiator murders its way to redemption, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon shows the perils of seeking revenge and not being true to yourself. Should Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon have won the Best Picture Oscar, or did the academy get it right with Gladiator? Crouch your tigers and hide your dragons, because this episode is going to make you vexed, terribly vexed!

Ever wondered what would have happened if your favorite movie had a different ending, or if a pivotal sports moment had gone the other way? That's the playground of the Alternative History Podcast, hosted by Brian Fischer and Rodrigo Monico-Barros. This isn't a dry lecture series; it's a lively, often comedic conversation between two friends diving into the pop culture moments, historical footnotes, and societal trends that didn't quite land as intended. Each episode picks apart a topic from movies, music, TV, sports, or books, examining how things could have-or perhaps should have-unfolded differently. The charm of this podcast lies in its genuine, meandering discussions that connect unexpected dots, finding humor and insight in the shared experiences that shape our culture. Listen in for a blend of casual analysis and lighthearted debate, where the goal is less about academic correction and more about celebrating the fascinating, messy stories we all remember. It's a space for reconsidering the past with a smile, one "what if" at a time.
