Episode 39: Missionary Folklore and Mission Legends

In Angels and Seerstones: A Latter Day Saint Folklore Podcast, hosts Christopher James Blythe and Christine Elyse Blythe navigate the rich and often surprising terrain of Mormon belief and practice. As professional folklorists and converts to the faith, they bring a unique dual perspective-both scholarly and deeply personal-to their explorations. This isn't a series of sermons or simple historical accounts; instead, each episode digs into the tangible, sometimes messy, ways faith is lived and experienced by ordinary people. You'll hear discussions about the narratives passed down through generations, from accounts of angelic visitations to the complex symbolism of objects like seerstones, placing them within the broader context of religious folklore. The podcast naturally delves into how these stories shape community identity, spark debate, and define what it means to be a Latter-day Saint. Chris and Christine openly profess their own beliefs while analytically examining the traditions they've embraced, creating a space where reverence meets critical inquiry. Their conversations span categories from spirituality and history to the darker, unexplained corners that brush against true crime, always grounded in the real-world implications of sacred lore. Tune in for a thoughtful, nuanced journey into the heart of a dynamic religious culture, where the divine intersects with the daily and ancient visions inform modern faith.
