Anyone who grew up as a “good kid” likely heard constant praise from the adults around them: “a delight to have in class,” “an old soul,” “so mature for their age.” Quiet, responsible, disciplined, and easygoing, these children are what many parents strive to raise—and when they succeed, both parent and child are rewarded with approval. But because these “good kids” appear so self-sufficient, few people think to check in on them. While they may seem to raise themselves, many are quietly struggling with perfectionism, overachieving, people-pleasing, and hyper-vigilance.In GOOD KIDS: Why You Suffered in Silence and How to Break the Cycle (Sheldon Press/Hachette UK; on sale 1/27/26), trauma therapist and parenting expert Maggie Nick explores how these children often grow into anxious, self-doubting adults. Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia is the final resting place for many notable men, including Declaration of Independence signer Thomas McKean, Civil War General George Meade, locomotive magnate Matthias Baldwin, astronomer David Rittenhouse, and Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas, plus many Union generals and even fictional characters like Adrian Balboa. But it is also home to tens of thousands of unique and accomplished women of the past three centuries. One man, Joe Lex, a retired emergency medicine doctor of 45 years, was inspired to learn of the history behind who is buried at this historical cemetery that tells not just Philadelphia’s history, but a history of the nation since its founding in 1836. He penned a book that highlights 52 interesting or accomplished women who are buried there, All Bones Considered: 52 Laurel Hill Women This book is a collection of dozens of amazing stories about unique individuals who are long gone. I’m always asking questions. The fun begins when you start researching for answers. Such as… If something is written in a journal two days out, is that breaking the rules of being a daily writer? Plus…we hear it all the time, it all fell into place. Does it really happen that way? I’m Arroe… I am a daily writer. A silent wolf. I stand on the sidelines and do nothing but watch, listen study then activate. I call it The Daily Mess. A chronological walk through an everyday world. Yes, it’s my morning writing. The newest installment of ESPN’s acclaimed 30 for 30 series, The Philly Special, focuses on the moment that propelled the Philadelphia Eagles to an upset win over the Patriots for their first Super Bowl title in 2018, told through the perspectives of the players, coaches, and fans who experienced it. It’s also a personal look at the city of Philadelphia, with its unique mix of heartfelt optimism, notorious pessimism, and unbridled underdog passion. Since 2018, the Philly Special has been immortalized on t-shirts, tattoos, murals, a statue outside Lincoln Financial Field, restaurant menus and multiple holiday albums recorded by the Eagles. It has transcended football to become part of Philadelphia’s cultural identity. It’s not just a play; it’s a rallying cry for a city used to being overlooked. While Philadelphia might be the birthplace of America, the 6th most populated city in the country lives and dies with an underdog mentality – one epitomized by the Founding Fathers, Rocky Balboa…

In the winter of 1860-61, one man, William Henry Seward, Republican Senator from New York (the presumptive favorite for the 1860 Republican nomination for president; defeated by Lincoln on the third ballot), labored mightily to effectuate his plan to save the Union. Because of history’s (and historians’) heavy bias to portray Lincoln as almost a saint (see, for example, Jon Meacham’s “And There Was Light: Abraham Lincoln and the American Struggle” (Random House 2022)), Seward’s prodigious efforts have either been ignored, given short shrift, or looked upon as something less than honorable. This short book – based upon original archival research and a comprehensive review of secondary sources – tells the story of Seward’s efforts. Counter-factual history is always an iffy business. But Seward’s “plan” did help to keep the Upper South States in the Union during the months before the president-elect became the president. And had his counsel been followed after March 4th, perhaps the cours…

Do you believe in resurrections? They happen every day. But are you willing to listen, to participate, to explore and find newer ways to understand your personal journey? This podcast isn’t about what we study and see through the eyes of religion. My Boy Boy Ernie spoke with me every chance we had together. But this isn’t about resurrecting a spiritual brother of nearly 34 years. This resurrection is that of a writing instrument. Verbal documentation of what some may call a vision quest. Trusting the great mysteries of life. Tools are handed to us to carve out each expectation. This tool was laid to rest inside a forest floor. To experience the elements of reality while connecting with a universe that unconditionally shares its stories. But whose writing it?
