First Book of Urizen-William Blake

Step into the wonderfully inverted world of Bab Ballads, where the celebrated wit of W. S. Gilbert takes center stage long before his legendary partnership with Arthur Sullivan. This podcast brings to life his original collection of illustrated light verse, each episode a journey into the absurd. Gilbert’s unique genius-his so-called topsy-turvy style-is on full display, constructing elaborate, ridiculous scenarios that unfold with a bizarre and impeccable internal logic. You’ll hear the sharp societal satire and the gentle, often cynical, humor that would later define his operatic masterpieces, but here in its raw, poetic form. Listening to this podcast feels like uncovering a hidden chapter of comic history, where every ballad is a self-contained story brimming with clever wordplay and unexpected moral twists. The verses, narrated with attention to their rhythmic charm and illustrated by Gilbert’s own drawings (described vividly for the ear), reveal a playwright honing his craft. It’s more than just recitation; it’s an immersion into the imaginative soil from which the Savoy Operas grew. For anyone fascinated by the roots of comedy, the artistry of performance, or simply the pleasure of a well-told, gloriously silly tale, this series offers a consistently surprising and engaging escape. The Bab Ballads podcast captures the timeless appeal of Gilbert’s work, proving that his brand of humor, where nothing is quite as it seems and everything ends with a witty flourish, remains as inventive and entertaining today as when first penned.
