Food for Thought with Jasmine Gui

Food for Thought with Jasmine Gui

Author: Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival May 23, 2023 Duration: 47:04

Backstory returns after a post-festival hiatus to usher in the launch of the fourth edition of TACLA’s Youth Critics Initiative (YCI), an annual incubator that guides emerging writers over the course of six months to produce critical works in a variety of formats in conversation with Reel Asian’s festival programming. Recorded in October during preparation for the 26th edition of the festival and fourth edition of YCI, co-editor Jasmine Gui joins Kelly and Aram to chew on all things critical and reflect on the program’s evolution over the years.

On the menu: hamster facts, authorizing oneself and the process of scrutiny, what to do with absence and erasure, the origins of haterism, and why you should be on Team Rice.

A monthly conversation from the heart of the festival circuit, Backstory pulls up a chair for candid discussions about the movies and the people who make them. Hosts Aram Collier and Kelly Lui, who are part of the programming team for the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival, bring their insider perspective and genuine curiosity to every episode. This isn't a formal interview series; it's where the talk naturally flows between film critique, industry shop talk, and the kind of personal stories shared over a good cup of tea. The focus rests firmly on the vibrant and evolving Asian and Asian Canadian media landscape, highlighting both the artists creating groundbreaking work and the cultural issues that shape their narratives. You'll hear from filmmakers, writers, and other creative voices, getting a sense of the community that festivals like Reel Asian cultivate. The rhythm of this podcast is intentionally fluid-released monthly, but with a flexible spirit that prioritizes meaningful conversation over a rigid schedule. Each episode of Backstory is written and hosted by Collier and Lui, with production handled by Seungwoo Baek, offering listeners a direct, authentic line into the discussions that happen behind the scenes. It’s for anyone who believes the most interesting part of a film often lies in the journey to the screen.
