2 - The Disciples' Depression

2 - The Disciples' Depression

Author: Exploring Bible Words in Greek and Hebrew March 31, 2024 Duration: 5:54

The two disciples who fled Jerusalem toward Emmaus, were discipled by Jesus himself. These two no doubt healed and cast out demons just like all the other 70 did. They were sufficiently strong in their faith to follow Jesus into the lion’s den, to go into Jerusalem with him. But despite all Jesus’ many warnings, they just weren’t prepared for his death, and it shattered their hope in a way they hadn’t anticipated. After such an onslaught their souls were deeply wounded and where the text says their “faces were downcast” it’s no stretch to guess that they were severely depressed, anxious, and mentally shattered.

Perhaps Luke left the identity of the one of these disciples vague on purpose, because at some point in our walk with Jesus, most of us will be hit by a barrage so overwhelming that it decimates all our hopes and dreams and we too will duck our head down and go running for cover.

Let me explain…

This episode digs deeper into “Skythropoi” (meaning ‘downcast’) in Luke 24:17

He [Jesus] asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”

They stood still, their faces downcast.” (NIV)

Luke 24:17 – Τίνες οἱ λόγοι οὗτοι οὓς ἀντιβάλλετε πρὸς ἀλλήλους περιπατοῦντες;” Καὶ ἐστάθησαν σκυθρωποί.

The journey through ancient texts often hinges on a single, potent term, a concept that loses dimension in translation. Bammerhab-Words from the Word is a quiet, focused excavation of those foundational terms. Each episode is a deep dive into a specific Greek or Hebrew word from scripture, peeling back layers of historical context, cultural nuance, and original meaning. This isn't about rushed readings or surface-level commentary; it's a deliberate unpacking, led by a writer with a scholar's curiosity and a storyteller's touch. You'll hear how a word's usage in everyday ancient life informs its theological weight, discovering connections and insights that typically remain hidden in plain sight. The aim is to enrich personal study and reflection by returning to the source material, offering listeners a more textured, grounded understanding of familiar passages. This podcast lives in the details, believing that a closer look at the building blocks of language can lead to a fuller appreciation of the text itself. For anyone interested in the intersection of faith, language, and history, these explorations provide substantive, contemplative material.
