Paul Brady on Tina Turner, Irish Music and Not Being Too Famous, ep. 324

Author: The Bluegrass Situation August 21, 2025 Duration: 54:33
Bob Dylan once called Paul Brady a "secret hero" and meant it as a compliment. The Irish songwriting legend has not been bothered by the fact that his profile has not risen as high as some of his peers. Starting off in the world of traditional Irish music, Brady spent time in the hugely influential Irish group Planxty until they disbanded in 1975. After that, he and bandmate Andy Irving recorded a record of trad music together. In 1981, he released an album of original songs titled 'Hard Station,' that was based on his experience of growing up during The Troubles in Northern Ireland. It was a huge left turn for him stylistically and in being so personal with his writing. After that, Brady's songwriting career took off; he has written songs for Bonnie Raitt, Santana, Tina Turner, and many others. In our Basic Folk conversation, he reflects on his upbringing and how music served as his reliable companion. He also discusses his parents' artistic influences, particularly his father's passion for acting and how it shaped his own stage performances. We touch on themes of perfectionism, imposter syndrome, and the inherent pressures of the music industry. Additionally, Paul talks about his latest massive box set, 'The Archive,' which features rare demos, live recordings, and unique collaborations, offering a comprehensive look at his extensive body of work. There's a certain magic that happens when musicians are given the space to talk not just about their craft, but about the life that feeds it. That's the heart of Basic Folk, a series of conversations that feel more like catching up with an old friend than a formal interview. Hosts Cindy Howes and Lizzie No bring a genuine curiosity and easy warmth to each episode, creating an environment where artists often share stories and insights they might not elsewhere. Since 2018, this podcast has carved out a vital niche, actively seeking to honor and platform the incredible, sometimes under-the-radar, voices within the roots music world. You'll find a beautifully diverse tapestry of sound and experience here, from technical wizards and Grammy-winners like Molly Tuttle to culturally pivotal figures like Leyla McCalla, all united by their connection to folk music's expansive tradition. Produced by The Bluegrass Situation, each episode digs into the personal journeys, creative struggles, and quiet triumphs that shape the music. It’s less about celebrity and more about substance, offering listeners a chance to intimately understand the people behind the songs. Tune in for thoughtful, humorous and deeply human dialogues that remind you why folk music, in all its forms, remains a powerful force for storytelling and connection.
