Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero and Q&A

Author: The Pensky File February 10, 2021 Duration: 1:40:23

This week on The BATTASS Podcast, we head back to the theater, or in this case, the home theater, as we bridge our season coverage by taking a look at the second film to emerge from the Batman the Animated Series universe, Batman & Mr. Freze: SubZero! But the fun doesn’t end there as, after our coverage of the film, Sean and Clay answer all the most burning questions submitted from our lovely listeners, covering a broad array of topics, bat-related and otherwise!

First up, in Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero, Mr Freeze kidnaps Barbara Gordon to use her plasma to rejuvenate his dying wife. Leaving Batman and Robin to race against time to save Barbara and stop Freeze’s desperate scheme. A return of the major heroic players from the animated series, as well as one of its most revered villains, Sub Zero offers a tour de force of animated action, the inclusion of new, digital animation techniques (some more successful than others), but comes up lacking in the story department. The ninety minute visual spectacle is unfortunately undercut by what amounts to only about twenty two minutes of story, and one that’s rather forgettable and inconsistent at that.

Next up Sean and Clay dive into the icy cold waters of the internet to spear some wild listener questions! They cover a variety of topics, both bat-related and otherwise, and get into the nitty-gritty of topics such as which characters in the series are overused, whether the series has held up to modern criticism, the future of Sean’s comic book Batman universe, and why Clay just can’t stop talking about the Dolph Lundgren Punisher movie! Come along for the ride as they get into all the explosive highs and ice-cold lows of Batman the Animated Series’ second foray into the film world, how and why it wasn’t as successful as the first try, and all of the illuminating answers to all the questions burning a hole in your mind’s ear! Grab your best polar bear buddies and skin dive into the icy deep with us!

Ever wonder what happens when two working comic book artists sit down to talk about the definitive cartoon version of the Dark Knight? That’s the simple, compelling premise behind BATTASS: The Batman The Animated Series Show Podcast. Hosts Clay McCormack and Sean Murphy bring their insider’s perspective from the drawing board to every discussion, breaking down each installment of the legendary series. Their conversations are less like formal reviews and more like you’re overhearing a deep, passionate, and often very funny debate between two experts who genuinely love the material. You’ll hear them trace the artistic influences in the show’s iconic style, analyze the sharp writing that appealed to both kids and adults, and share personal insights into why certain characters or storylines resonate so powerfully within the broader world of comics. This isn’t a rushed recap; it’s a thoughtful, episode-by-episode excavation of what made Batman: The Animated Series a cultural touchstone. The result is a consistently engaging podcast that feels both educational and entertaining, offering a unique lens on a show many of us thought we already knew everything about. New episodes from The Pensky File dive into a single chapter of the animated saga, making it a perfect companion whether you’re revisiting the series or discovering it for the first time.
