Joyride & Lost Soul

Author: The Pensky File December 23, 2022 Duration: 1:19:35

Get in the car (or in this case the stolen military aircraft), nerds, we’re going Jokering! Then we’re all gonna get blitzed and upload our consciousnesses to the hard drives and hijack some bat suits! That’s right, this week on BATTASS Beyond we’re checking out the Jokerz initiation gone wild and Terry’s first mission with no fancy gadgets in Joy Ride and Lost Soul!

Per DCAU Wiki:

“Joyride” is the sixteenth episode of Batman Beyond. It depicts the troubles Gotham faces when a group of Jokerz hijack a prototype military vehicle. After finding an abandoned military vehicle, one of the Jokerz, Scab, takes it for a joyride and proceeds to try and take out Batman and a rival gang known as the “T’s”. However, unbeknownst to the gang, its power source is a nuclear reactor and is about to go critical. Now Batman must stop them and shut off the reactor before it explodes and destroys half the city.

“Lost Soul” is the fourth episode of the second season of Batman Beyond. It depicts the trouble brought to Gotham when a rogue computer program sweeps Gotham’s computer network. Re-released thirty years later, it enters into Gotham’s computer networks and eventually downloads into the Batsuit, seeking to fulfill his true agenda: a new body. Now Terry must fight his own suit without any powers.

We’ve got some hooligans on the run and some digital consciousness shenanigans this week, and one of these episodes is better than the other, but you’ll have to listen to find out which is which! We’ve got some returning voices, and a hint at the Bat-Family of the past, all in all some fun stuff no matter how you shake it.

So, put on some facepaint, maybe visit the Joker’s grave, put on an old utility belt and makeshift mask, and join us for another episode of BATTASS Beyond!!

Ever wonder what happens when two working comic book artists sit down to talk about the definitive cartoon version of the Dark Knight? That’s the simple, compelling premise behind BATTASS: The Batman The Animated Series Show Podcast. Hosts Clay McCormack and Sean Murphy bring their insider’s perspective from the drawing board to every discussion, breaking down each installment of the legendary series. Their conversations are less like formal reviews and more like you’re overhearing a deep, passionate, and often very funny debate between two experts who genuinely love the material. You’ll hear them trace the artistic influences in the show’s iconic style, analyze the sharp writing that appealed to both kids and adults, and share personal insights into why certain characters or storylines resonate so powerfully within the broader world of comics. This isn’t a rushed recap; it’s a thoughtful, episode-by-episode excavation of what made Batman: The Animated Series a cultural touchstone. The result is a consistently engaging podcast that feels both educational and entertaining, offering a unique lens on a show many of us thought we already knew everything about.
