Mean Seasons & Critters

Mean Seasons & Critters

Author: The Pensky File August 18, 2021 Duration: 1:10:49

This week on the BATTASS Podcast, we get a brand new baddie with a lazy costume and a specific theme, as well as some gigantic, rampaging farm animals with a grudge in Mean Seasons and Critters! Not going to beat around the bush here–these are not great episodes. But hopefully, this episode of the podcast can bring you all the entertainment these two stinkers failed to deliver! It’s “Mean Seasons” and “Critters“.

First up, in Mean Seasons, Batman and Batigirl take on the devious damsel of daylight savings – the Calendar Girl! She’s got an outfit for every occasion, and a day and date to do her dastardly deeds! In what feels like kind of a retread of the Baby Doll story, Page Monroe becomes the new villain Calendar Girl in order to get revenge on the industry jerks who wronged her! It’s themed outfits and hunky goons galore in this one!

Next up in Critters, microbiologist Farmer Brown proudly displays the results of his research: a giant sheep. He believes that having giant animals will help to end world hunger. Unfortunately for him, it doesn’t go the way he planned, and the shame, embarrassment, and rejection he feels after his giant sheep goes on a rampage causes him to use his cutting edge science for evil purposes! And he’s also got a daughter who I think has been getting HGH injections or something. It’s a really weird episode, for sure.

Lots of things happen in these episodes, with the pendulum swinging from “lazy” to “what the hell?” but unfortunately it doesn’t make for the most riveting television. The series unfortunately feels like it’s running out of steam a bit at this point, so hopefully, the next couple can turn the ship around!  But hey, even mediocre Batman still makes for a fun BATTASS, so put on your best candy corn earrings, cook up a rack of ribs, and check this one out.

Ever wonder what happens when two working comic book artists sit down to talk about the definitive cartoon version of the Dark Knight? That’s the simple, compelling premise behind BATTASS: The Batman The Animated Series Show Podcast. Hosts Clay McCormack and Sean Murphy bring their insider’s perspective from the drawing board to every discussion, breaking down each installment of the legendary series. Their conversations are less like formal reviews and more like you’re overhearing a deep, passionate, and often very funny debate between two experts who genuinely love the material. You’ll hear them trace the artistic influences in the show’s iconic style, analyze the sharp writing that appealed to both kids and adults, and share personal insights into why certain characters or storylines resonate so powerfully within the broader world of comics. This isn’t a rushed recap; it’s a thoughtful, episode-by-episode excavation of what made Batman: The Animated Series a cultural touchstone. The result is a consistently engaging podcast that feels both educational and entertaining, offering a unique lens on a show many of us thought we already knew everything about. New episodes from The Pensky File dive into a single chapter of the animated saga, making it a perfect companion whether you’re revisiting the series or discovering it for the first time.
