De La Soul x Crack

De La Soul x Crack

Author: theGrio June 1, 2023 Duration: 29:52
"My Brother’s A Basehead” is a true story. Posdnous from De La Soul had an older brother who had a crack addiction and it was very damaging for the whole family. For Pos and his parents, crack was literally in the house just as it was in many houses and many families during the crack era. Crack decimated many families and De La Soul made one of the most powerful songs about all that. In this episode we talk about how crack destroyed families and what went into the making of "My Brother’s A Basehead.” We talk to Prince Paul, De La Soul’s producer who’s sometimes called the 4th member of the group. We also talk about a very different song about crack users, Public Enemy’s Night of the Living Baseheads, which looked down on people who used crack while one of the members of PE was a crack addict. PE's producer Hank Shocklee joins us for that.     Guests: Prince Paul, Producer - De La Soul is Dead Hank Shocklee, Producer - Public Enemy Credits: De La Soul - My Brothers a Basehead Writer: Posdnuos, Trugoy the Dove, Prince Paul, Maseo, Clint Ballard Jr. & Robby Krieger Label: Tommy Boy Records Publisher: Tee Girl Music, MCA Music, Shapiro Bernstein & Doors Music Co. Hosted by theGrio, Being Black-The '80s is a deep-dive audio documentary that examines an entire decade through the lens of its most pivotal songs. This isn't just a music history podcast; it's a cultural excavation. Each episode isolates one track that became an anthem, unpacking the studio craft, the artist's vision, and, crucially, the world it echoed and influenced. You'll hear how the rhythms and rhymes were inextricably linked to the sociopolitical currents shaping Black America, from the crack epidemic and the rise of hip-hop to the complexities of identity and pop crossover. The series treats these songs as historical artifacts, understanding that the beat contained the news. By focusing on a single piece of music per episode, the podcast allows for a rich, textured exploration of how art is forged within a specific moment and how, in turn, it can redefine that moment for millions. The first season dedicates itself entirely to the vibrant and tumultuous 1980s, analyzing how the music provided a soundtrack to joy, resistance, innovation, and struggle. Listen for a compelling blend of sonic analysis and cultural commentary that connects the dots between the boombox on the corner and the broader narrative of a community in flux.
