#13 Ten thousand Beyond Belief dollars [S2E7]

Today we review Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction season 2, episode 7. Kyle and the gang agree that this episode was particularly good, though Kyle doesn’t quite know what a creepy noise sounds like, or what jelly sounds like. Jesse admits he doesn’t have a good grasp on the stories this week. Chris asks off air, “Do you guys write down fact or fiction ahead of time?” Kyle doesn’t. Tiffany does. Mark usually writes “fact” for all the stories ahead of time; Jesse usually writes “fiction”.

Story 1: The Mummy—When a Museum displays a rare mummy, a mysterious murder begins to unravel.

• Kyle points out that the mummy’s body is never recovered, so why didn’t the killer just hide the murder victim where they hid the mummy’s body.
• Jesse wonders if there’s a certain cost for ghosts to visit us from the afterlife. Why couldn’t the ghost show them where the mummy is?
• The group realizes that all their knowledge of mummies is from The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser.
• Chris thinks this must be real because if it were fiction the writers would have written about the actual mummy more.

Story 2: The Perfect Record—A security guard with a perfect record trains a new employee, but some records are meant to be broken.

• Chris has a great reason for this to be fact: if it was fiction, why didn’t the writers have the security guard use his telekinesis to lock the robbers in the vault?
• Turns out the only one who believes in telekinesis is Kyle. Chris is somewhere in the middle.
• Mark thinks the kernel could simply be that there was a power surge, which attracted the police.

Story 3: Grave Sitting—A girl is challenged to spend two hours alone by the grave of a serial killer.

• Mark cannot remember the name of the serial killer.
• No one understands why the girl needed to stab the ground.
• Jesse thinks this is classic urban legend territory. Past “urban legendy” stories are usually fiction.

Story 4: Murder On The Second Floor—Eyewitness testimony at the scene of a murder points to a killer who’s 18 feet tall.

• Kyle and Chris question the giant’s shoes. Was a large shoe faked to create a footprint, or was it really a giant with his own cobbler?
• Tiffany doesn’t think this story feels like a classic Before Belief story. There’s no mysterious question, it’s just… “here’s what we think might have happened.”
• Kyle compares this to Robin’s origin story.
• Jesse doesn’t know who told this story. Would the cop who had a wild hunch but no real drive to actually solve the crime really tell other people?

Story 5: They Towed My Car—A mysterious outsider wonders a town looking for his car.

• Jesse reveals this is his favorite title for a Beyond Belief episode to date.
• The group points out how this is essentially the story about the mummy just in a different… wrapping.
• Jesse thinks witnesses could have been people in the town lying and wanting to be apart of the story.

The story results are revealed.

• This is the first mention of author Robert Tralins, which is where many of the “fact” based stories are sourced from.
• The crew is shocked to discover that Jonathan Frakes references one of the stories being an urban legend….
