The subpoena was part of a broader civil case in which the U.S. Virgin Islands sought records from multiple high-profile individuals and institutions to examine Epstein’s financial network. Musk responded sharply, calling the effort “idiotic on so many levels,” and stated that he had never visited Epstein’s island and had declined invitations in the past. He characterized the subpoena as overreach and suggested his name was being dragged into proceedings without substantive justification.


The subpoena request was tied to the Virgin Islands’ lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase, which alleged the bank enabled Epstein’s trafficking operation by continuing to provide financial services despite warning signs. As part of that case, attorneys sought communications and financial records from individuals who may have interacted with Epstein, including prominent business leaders.
