Montana Volunteers Fix Absentee Ballot Glitch

Montana Volunteers Fix Absentee Ballot Glitch

Author: The Daily News Now! April 23, 2026 Duration: 1:13

Volunteers in Gallatin County, Montana, are working tirelessly to correct a major issue on over sixty-two thousand absentee ballot envelopes for the upcoming primary. The barcodes were misprinted, causing them to be routed to the wrong location in the state. To fix this, volunteers are applying stickers directly over the barcodes before mailing begins. The problem stems from the secretary of states ballot format guidelines, which matched the faulty barcode design. Election officials caught the issue early, allowing them to address it before primary ballots are sent out on May eighth. Longtime volunteer Kathie Scarrah and her team are handling up to a thousand envelopes per shift, ensuring democracy runs smoothly. The post office will scan the address and print the correct barcode, thanks to the stickers. School election ballots due May fifth have a special plan in place with postal workers. Voters must remember to sign and fill in the four red boxes with their birth year below the signature to ensure their ballots count. With primaries due June second, these volunteers are dedicated to keeping the voting process on track.
