Breaking Nuts: The one that made Larissa cry

Breaking Nuts: The one that made Larissa cry

Author: Brazil Nuts April 30, 2020 Duration: 1:06:43

Hello, everyone! Again! Twice in the same day – but for good reason. This is our special episode on the coronavirus pandemic and how it has been affecting Brazil. Or rather, how the existing structure and politicians in Brazil are shaping the consequences of the pandemic in the country.

This episode touches on Bolsonaro, the military in his cabinet, differences between states, and, more importantly, the lack of accurate numbers. Brazil has now, officially, nearly 80.000 cases and over 5.000 deaths. When we recorded, on 29 April, it was closed to 72 thousand cases and the city of Blumenau (SC), lifted lockdown and saw it case number shoot up by 173%. The country has become one of the most affected countries in the world, something that has gone severely underreported by the international media.

Don’t forget to also tune in to our regular episode, where we discuss the Brazilian public healthcare system, the SUS.

Oh, as usual, bit of a disclaimer: we’re still fixing up our sound, so please don’t mind any little bumps here and there. We made this episode over the course of one week due to this issue, so some things might have been be repeated; but the data is all as recent as the day of recording.

Brazil Nuts: an insane journey through the world of Brazilian politics is a weekly exploration of the forces that have shaped, and continue to shake, the nation. Hosts Larissa and Gareth guide you through a landscape where triumph and tragedy are inseparable, finding the compelling stories within the chaos. Each episode connects the dots between past and present, examining how events like the 1970 World Cup victory or the long, complex process of abolition resonate in today's political climate. This isn't just a history lesson; it's an ongoing conversation about power, identity, and the sheer unpredictability of life in South America's largest country. You'll hear analysis that makes sense of the headlines by understanding the deep cultural and historical currents beneath them. The podcast thrives on the specific details-the bizarre scandals, the beautiful acts of resilience, and the bad policy decisions-that collectively tell a bigger story. Tune in for a perspective that is as informed as it is engaging, offering clarity on a subject that defies simple explanation. The journey is indeed insane, but it's one that makes the fascinating complexity of Brazil accessible, episode by episode.
