How a Tiny Device Could Transform Fetal Surgery with Aimen Shaaban, MD

How a Tiny Device Could Transform Fetal Surgery with Aimen Shaaban, MD

Author: Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine May 26, 2026 Duration: 20:18

Fetal surgery can be lifesaving for babies diagnosed with complex conditions before birth, but it comes with significant challenges, including limited ability to monitor the fetus in real time. A Northwestern Medicine team has developed a first-of-its-kind flexible probe, designed for continuous real-time fetal monitoring during surgery.

This innovation is the result of a collaboration between Northwestern University bioelectronics pioneer John Rogers, PhD, and Aimen Shaaban, MD, director of the Chicago Institute for Fetal Health. In this episode, Shaaban explains how the device works, how the collaboration took place and what it will take to bring this technology out of the lab and into clinical care.

Tune into Breakthroughs for a direct line to the labs and minds at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Each episode pulls back the curtain on the process of discovery, letting you hear directly from the researchers themselves as they explain the questions that keep them up at night and the moments of insight that change everything. This isn't just about announcing findings; it's about understanding the human effort behind them. You'll get a clear sense of how a single study can ripple out, influencing treatments and shifting our entire approach to wellness. The conversations in this podcast are grounded in the belief that transforming medicine starts with asking better questions. From detailed explorations of cellular mechanisms to broader discussions on public health, the content connects the dots between specialized science and its real-world impact.
