Go Behind the Scenes With Hoda Afshar at Her First Major Exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSWA

Author: Broadsheet November 15, 2023 Duration: 13:19

Hoda Afshar was already set to have a major year before she was approached by the Art Gallery of NSW to create a new exhibition. In 2023, the Iranian-born, Melbourne-based artist has had showings at this year’s Sharjah Biennial in February, as well as the Tarrawarra Biennial and the Museum of Contemporary Art in June. The Melbourne-based photographer is known for her sensitive political images, including ones she took on Manus Island in 2018 and a series shot in Iran where she grapples with her connection to, and disconnect from, her home country. Now, she’s celebrating the opening of A Curve is a Broken Line at AGNSW, her first major solo exhibition.

Every other Tuesday, Broadsheet Sydney: Around Town offers a quiet conversation with someone shaping the city's character. This isn't about headlines or trends, but the people behind the places and ideas that define daily life here. You might hear from a chef who quietly reimagined a neighborhood's dining scene, or an artist whose work changes how we see a familiar street. The discussion could just as easily turn to the craft of a local distiller or the vision of a small shop owner whose taste influences what we wear. Hosted by Broadsheet, each episode is a deliberate look at the intersections of food, art, fashion, and society, revealing how creative minds build the culture we experience. Tuning into this podcast feels like pulling up a chair at a corner table with the most interesting person in the room-the stories are specific, the impact is tangible, and the focus is always on the human element driving Sydney forward. It’s for anyone curious about the why and the who behind the city's vibrant surface.
