Today, we're chatting with Malaysian chef Junda Khoo, the restaurateur behind four Ho Jiak venues in Sydney. With a background in banking, Junda's path to professional cooking was unconventional. He credits his love of flavour to his grandmother, but he really learnt to cook as a teenager when he first moved to Sydney and was given $150 per week to spend on groceries. Today, Junda relishes the opportunity to challenge the meaning of 'authentic' Malaysian food and his cooking is guided by one simple principle: 'was it delicious?'.

Every other Tuesday, Broadsheet Sydney: Around Town offers a quiet conversation with someone shaping the city's character. This isn't about headlines or trends, but the people behind the places and ideas that define daily life here. You might hear from a chef who quietly reimagined a neighborhood's dining scene, or an artist whose work changes how we see a familiar street. The discussion could just as easily turn to the craft of a local distiller or the vision of a small shop owner whose taste influences what we wear. Hosted by Broadsheet, each episode is a deliberate look at the intersections of food, art, fashion, and society, revealing how creative minds build the culture we experience. Tuning into this podcast feels like pulling up a chair at a corner table with the most interesting person in the room-the stories are specific, the impact is tangible, and the focus is always on the human element driving Sydney forward. It’s for anyone curious about the why and the who behind the city's vibrant surface.
