"There Are No Rules" at O Tama Carey's Crab Curry Sundays

Author: Broadsheet August 11, 2023 Duration: 16:20

Crab curry is a staple in Sri Lanka, and who better to cook it in Sydney than the masterful O Tama Carey, author of Lanka Food? On the last Sunday of every month the chef runs Crab Curry Sundays at her Darlinghurst restaurant Lankan Filling Station. Each meal starts with a few snacks, then moves onto the hallowed blue swimmer crab curry. It’s served with mallung (a wok-tossed vegetable dish), dahl, sambols, heirloom rice and papadams. O Tama joins Around Town to chat Sri Lankan food, working with native ingredients and workshopping ideas with her partner, chef Matt Lindsay (AP Bakery, Poly, Ester).

Every other Tuesday, Broadsheet Sydney: Around Town offers a quiet conversation with someone shaping the city's character. This isn't about headlines or trends, but the people behind the places and ideas that define daily life here. You might hear from a chef who quietly reimagined a neighborhood's dining scene, or an artist whose work changes how we see a familiar street. The discussion could just as easily turn to the craft of a local distiller or the vision of a small shop owner whose taste influences what we wear. Hosted by Broadsheet, each episode is a deliberate look at the intersections of food, art, fashion, and society, revealing how creative minds build the culture we experience. Tuning into this podcast feels like pulling up a chair at a corner table with the most interesting person in the room-the stories are specific, the impact is tangible, and the focus is always on the human element driving Sydney forward. It’s for anyone curious about the why and the who behind the city's vibrant surface.
