Caipirinha Appreciation Society: Brazilian music beyond the clichés

For nearly two decades, the Caipirinha Appreciation Society: Brazilian music beyond the clichés has been a vital, curious voice exploring the vast landscape of sound from Brazil. Hosts MdC Suingue and Kika Serra steer clear of the obvious postcard images and familiar bossa nova loops, digging instead into the rich soil where genres blend and history resonates. Each episode feels like a conversation with deeply knowledgeable friends, one that might begin with the political fury of Tropicalia, detour through the rhythmic intricacies of Choro, and land in a contemporary indie scene you never knew existed. This isn't a lecture; it's an invitation to listen differently. Since its first broadcast in December 2004, the podcast has built a formidable archive that treats MPB, Samba, and Brazilian Soul with equal parts scholarly respect and infectious passion. The joy here is in the connections made between eras and styles, revealing how music tells the story of a culture. Tuning in means hearing the tracks that defined movements alongside those that are quietly shaping its future, all presented with context and commentary that goes far deeper than any algorithm could suggest. For anyone ready to move past the greatest hits, this long-running podcast offers a genuinely expansive and authentic journey.
