Chronicle 85: "UPDATE - Victim of a Narcissist" (Part 1)

Author: Nicole Turner September 9, 2024 Duration: 35:27
This episode is rated a 5 (on my Serious Crime Scale). In March of 2003, 20-year-old community college student Megan McDonald was severely beaten and murdered, and then her lifeless body was dumped in a remote area. Like a real-life “Criminal Minds” story, the Behavioral Analysis Unit, or the BAU (a branch of the FBI), put together a profile of her killer. The BAU determined that Megan’s murderer was/is a person with textbook narcissistic personality disorder who couldn’t take no for answer. Although they had a good idea of exactly who this person was for years, police never publicly identified Megan’s killer – that is, until April 20, 2023. And THIS is where our update comes in. When I first dropped this episode on April 10, 2023, it was just 10 days before police announced that Megan’s ex-boyfriend, a man by the name of Edward Holley, had been arrested for her murder. Now, when I first covered this story, all investigators were saying at the time was that they hoped to make an arrest soon… Y’all, I didn’t realize they meant like, TEN days away soon… So, that means when I ran the episode, I told the whole story without ever identifying a suspect. In fact, I used the pseudonym of John, instead of using the suspect’s real name because I didn’t know his real name at the time. So, NOW, I’d like to replay the episode. I’m not going to re-record it, but when you are listening to it this time around (or, perhaps the first time if you’re new here), I want you to do so with this guy in mind. Every time I refer to the prime suspect or the pseudonym of John, just know it is this guy, Edward Holley, who police were looking at the whole time. But stick around until the end because not only will I give you additional information about Edward Holley, but as you’ve probably noticed already from the title of this episode, there is SO much more to this story and SO much more that needs to be told – so much so that I couldn’t fit it all into one single episode. I needed to make it a two-parter. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Nicole Turner has spent her career within the walls of academia, and now she brings that unique perspective to Campus Crime Chronicles. As both a professor and an administrator, she understands the complex ecosystem of a college campus-the rhythms of student life, the pressures, the closed communities, and the specific vulnerabilities that can exist. This podcast digs into cases that occur in these unique settings, from long-unsolved mysteries in campus libraries to modern-day digital crimes that spread through university networks. Each episode is built on meticulous research, examining not just the "what" of a crime, but the "why" these environments can become a backdrop for tragedy. You'll hear about cases that made national headlines alongside obscure incidents that reveal deeper systemic issues, all analyzed through Nicole's informed lens. The goal isn't just to recount events, but to explore the lasting impact on victims, families, and the very idea of a campus as a sanctuary. For anyone fascinated by true crime but weary of the same well-trodden stories, this series offers a distinct and thoughtful niche. Tune in for a compelling blend of investigative narrative and institutional insight, where every story begins at a place meant for learning.
