Better Bedside Manner: Treating Patients with Kindness, Decency, and Humor

Better Bedside Manner: Treating Patients with Kindness, Decency, and Humor

Author: Dr. Brad Miller August 1, 2024 Duration: 34:48

In this episode, Dr. Brad Miller and Deb Krier discuss bedside manners and treating patients with dignity and respect in a doctor-patient relationship. They highlight the need for healthcare professionals to prioritize patient dignity and empathy. By fostering a more humanizing experience, healthcare professionals can improve patient outcomes and create a more positive healing environment.

Visiting the doctor isn't always the most enjoyable thing to do when you have cancer or any other medical treatment.

Dr. Brad shared his experience of going back to the doctor again after 10 years. His sleep apnea has caused him to struggle with it his entire life, so his doctor advised him to come back. With that appointment, he experienced a humorous conversation with his doctor. He realized from that visit that dignity, respect, and being personable are important in the doctor-patient relationship.

Deb also talked about her experience firing multiple doctors because they did not get along. She went to a doctor who advised her to listen and not speak. Without even reviewing Deb's records, the doctor merely gave her the typical medical advice.

Because of these experiences, Dr. Brad and Deb have seen the importance of treating people with decency and respect. Some patients may have been on the verge of giving up. However, when they receive respect and dignity, things might occasionally go entirely the other way.

Warm human communication and connection make a world of difference. Deb emphasized the importance of introducing yourself and learning the other person's name. Establishing that relationship right at the very start will last the whole time. As Deb’s mother used to say, smile and say thank you.

Relationships, humor, and hope are all related to healing because it is connected to being human. Living a life of respect and dignity is a necessary part of being human.

There's a particular kind of alchemy that happens when serious things meet sincere laughter, and that's the space where you'll find Cancer and Comedy: Helping Cancer Impacted People to Cope with Hope and Humor. Hosted by Dr. Brad Miller, this podcast emerged from a deeply personal place. Fresh into retirement after 43 years as a pastor, Brad received a prostate cancer diagnosis during the Christmas season of 2022. His instinctive reaction-to laugh as a way to keep from crying-sparked a mission. Each episode is built on the belief that those touched by cancer are not done living, and that facing the grim with a grin is a powerful form of resilience. You'll hear conversations that blend candid stories from the cancer journey with a genuine, often surprising, sense of humor. It’s not about dismissing the difficulty, but about discovering pockets of light and levity within it. Brad brings his unique perspective as both a longtime spiritual guide and a current patient, creating dialogues that are as educational about mental and physical wellness as they are uplifting. This isn't a lecture; it's a companionable audio experience for anyone seeking to fortify their spirit with hope and an honest, sometimes healing, laugh. Tune in for a podcast that redefines strength, proving that coping can be a creative, and even comedic, act of self-improvement.
