Michael Sokolowski, Cleveland Icon, Passes Away
Michael Sokolowski, a beloved figure in Cleveland, Ohio, passed away on February 24, 2026. Known for his role as a co-owner of the historic Sokolowski’s University Inn, he was a true Cleveland landmark. The restaurant, which opened in 1923 and closed in 2020, was the citys oldest family-owned spot and earned the James Beard American Classics Award in 2014. Sokolowski was more than just a restaurateur; he was a sports enthusiast, having played baseball and football in high school, graduated from Otterbein University, and umpired games, including at Cleveland Indians fantasy camps. He was also a passionate cook, teaching classes at the Polaris Career Center’s culinary program. Music was another love of his, playing drums in bands and at his church, and attending numerous concerts. He was also active in the Cleveland Society of Poles and the Knights of Columbus. Friends and family can pay their respects at St. John Cantius Catholic Church on March 7, 2026.
