Today, I’m joined by Claire who’s chosen to talk about the witch trials which took place in Scotland between 1590 and 1727 and why there is a campaign now to have those women and men who were executed for witchcraft to be officially pardoned by the government. To start us off with this topic, Claire has found us two texts to read:

A Brief History of Calling Women Witches

https://lithub.com/a-brief-history-of-calling-women-witches/

Why the witch-hunt victims of early modern Britain have come back to haunt us

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/oct/24/why-the-witch-hunt-victims-of-early-modern-britain-have-come-back-to-haunt-us

During the conversation, she also mentions the Witches of Scotland campaign and you can find more information about that here:

I also recommend a podcast episode I listened to a year or so ago about the European witch craze:

Claire is an English educator and runs The Edinburgh Experience. She specialises in using Scottish culture as a vehicle for people to connect with and learn English. She runs cultural immersion programs every summer and also a new “Tours with Tots” program for parents where they can use their brains (!) and learn about Scottish history while meeting other new parents.

If you've reached a point in your English studies where typical lessons feel too shallow, Deep Talk: Advanced English Discussions with Rhiannon ELT might be the conversation you've been missing. Hosted by Rhiannon Carter, this podcast moves firmly beyond standard grammar drills and vocabulary lists to engage with the complex, provocative, and often overlooked subjects that shape our world. Each episode is built on the belief that true language mastery happens when you're intellectually invested, tackling themes that genuinely spark curiosity and debate. You'll hear thoughtful explorations into matters like societal attitudes toward death and dying, the nuances of LGBT rights, and the intriguing process of how history gets rewritten. Rhiannon guides these advanced discussions with clarity, making sophisticated ideas accessible while naturally modeling the precise vocabulary and fluid expression fluent speakers use. The dialogue might wander into the cultural significance of witchcraft, examine the relationship between exercise and menstrual cycles, or even pull back the curtain on the less-glamorous realities of being a language teacher on social media. This isn't about passive listening; it's an invitation to stretch your comprehension and develop your own opinions on substantive topics. For advanced learners seeking a richer, more authentic context for their skills, this podcast provides a unique space where challenging English becomes the tool for deeper understanding, not just the end goal.
