#39 Fighting a New Era of Disinformation with Claire Wardle

#39 Fighting a New Era of Disinformation with Claire Wardle

Author: UO School of Journalism and Communication, Damian Radcliffe February 5, 2020 Duration: 27:17
In this podcast we catch up with Dr. Claire Wardle, who visited the SOJC as a Demystifying Media guest lecturer in 2016 to discuss how Silicon Valley was driving changes in online publishing. We were lucky to have her back in our newly renovated podcast studio to share her research on the rapidly evolving strategies that promoters of disinformation are using to influence public opinion--and what journalists can do about it. We are also joined by Sydney Dauphinais, news director at KWVA, the 24-Hour campus radio station here at the University of Oregon.

Trying to make sense of the relentless shifts in our media landscape can feel overwhelming. Demystifying Media at the University of Oregon exists to pull back the curtain on that process, offering a grounded space for understanding. Stemming from the Hearst Demystifying Media Series within the UO School of Journalism and Communication, this podcast is hosted by professor Damian Radcliffe, who guides conversations that feel more like insightful seminars than formal interviews. You’ll hear directly from leading media practitioners, innovators, and scholars who are shaping the field right now. Episodes dig into the practical realities of digital developments in journalism and communication, exploring their implications for business, entrepreneurship, and the broader technological tools that redefine how stories are told and consumed. Rather than offering abstract theory, the discussions focus on tangible changes and future possibilities, making complex ideas accessible. It’s a resource for anyone curious about the forces transforming our information ecosystem, from students and educators to professionals navigating these changes daily. Tune in for a thoughtful analysis of the evolving relationships between creators, audiences, and the platforms that connect them.
